Rapid București lifted the Romanian Cup for the 12th time, after an extra-time victory over FC Național. Rapid might have lifted the cup as recently as 2002, but this was the first trophy of coach Răzvan Lucescu in his career. Daniel Niculae was the difference between the sides, scoring in the first minute of overtime with a shot from 20 metres, Eugen Nae being unable to keep the ball. It was due reward for Rapid's dominance of the first 90 minutes, when they wasted at least six clear opportunities to score. Rapid started the match better, and had three opportunities in first 15 minutes of the match. First, Daniel Niculae shot from 16 metres, but was at his post, minute 9, then in followed the shot of Daniel Pancu, in minute 12, but it was deflected by Mihai Panc and at the corner which followed, M.Constantin headed to the post, but Eugen Nae rejected. FC Național balanced the match and had the first opportunity in minute 15, when Abiodun headed close to the bar. It followed the shot of Australian Griffiths, in minute 22, which obligated Coman to reject in corner. A huge opportunity had Pancu in minute 30, he was found alone at 6 metres, but Nae blocked him. The final of first half was of the Național's players, Coman saving the goal after the free kick of Bundea, in minute 44. In second half both teams risked less, so the first interesting moment came in minute 61, when Daniel Niculae shot from angle, but near by the post. The same Niculae headed in minute 68, but he missed the target. One minute later, Viorel Moldovan was blocked when he tried to shoot, the ball came to Niculae who failed again from a very good position. Național ceded the middle of the field, but Griffiths remained dangerous for the defence of Rapid, he being supported by Abiodun and Bundea. After 25 seconds of extra time, Daniel Niculae shot powerful from 20 metres, the ball touched the ground and jumped in front of Nae, and Rapid opened the score. Național had to play offensive from that moment, needing to score, but Rapid was good on counter attack too. Rapid had many opportunities to increase the advantage in minutes 104, 105, 108, 113, 117, through Buga and Moldovan. Rapid deserved to win Romanian Cup for the 12th time, having assured now the presence in next season of European cups.
